Today's "Be A Hero" lesson is "Think Before You Speak."
Sometimes we say things before we think about how our words will effect those around us. Today I ask you to try, as an experiment, to think before you speak. Ask yourself, "Will my response make a difference?" If not, don't give one. Ask yourself, "Will my opinion hurt someone's feelings *and* not contribute to improving them or the over-all task at hand in any way?" If so, don't give it.

On that note, I had wonderful night of musical inspiration last night. I saw one of my idols, Elvis Costello, live in concert, as I have many times before. Yet, this time, I was right up front, and, I swear it felt like we had a "moment." In keeping with our experiment, "Be A Hero" and do NOT write me about how I'm being silly and it never happened. Ask yourself, "What good would come from that?" NONE.

Sometimes being a "hero" isn't about what you say...
It's about what you don't. Here's my story:

Elvis Costello's 1st televised live performance!

This so called "Pop Superhero" bows to today to "Pop Legend": ELVIS COSTELLO. EC is one of my greatest inspirations, and I have followed his career for decades. Yes, I'm all in, buying every CD he releases, live DVDs, video collections, TV appearances and reading interviews in magazines. The fact is that my life changed the first time I heard "My Aim Is True."

Until a boyfriend introduced me to the musical world that Elvis Costello created, I was stuck in censored, Payola poisoned, pre-programmed, Wonder Bread bland, radio land. I was so sheltered that I had no idea any other world existed. (Ah... to be so much more naive again... and so much less bitter.) Then Tom, that is the "Ex" that I owe this priceless debt to, placed the precious vinyl that is "My Aim Is True" on his turntable... HEAVEN.

I must have played that record 100 times, singing and memorizing every word... then the vocal phrasing... then analyzing the deeper meanings behind the lyrics (for which EC never leaves us wanting). Finally... Music that made me think! Elvis' vocal delivery and ability to cut right to the heart of his subjects always leave you feeling as if he's speaking directly to you. As if, somehow, the man got in your head without permission. Intimate and invasive, yet always welcome, Elvis Costello's music became my therapy of choice.

I had the pleasure of seeing Elvis Costello & The Imposters live in concert last night, in Mansfield, MA, and the privileged of sitting in the first few rows. (Being of modest means growing up, I swore I'd never pay hundreds of dollars to see *anybody* perform. But Elvis continues to inspire me to change my way of thinking still... The show was worth every penny!) EC was opening for The Police, another band of much inspiration, but that's another story...

At first glance, I was sad to see so many empty seats for a Hall of Fame musician humbling himself as an opening act. Then I remembered that perspective is everything in this world, and decided to focus on the positive side of this: there wasn't a single person standing between me and my idol! I was mesmerized, hearing his voice trail off in my trance like state. My tunnel vision focused in on every facial tick and vocal inflection. I was 18 again and hearing "Allison" for the first time... AH BLISS. Then, I swear to God, I had a moment with Elvis Costello.

Every life-long fan should be entitled to one "moment" with their idol. We've invested a lifetime of intently hanging on their every word in interviews, patiently awaiting their new CDs, and spending our hard earned money proudly in support of their vision. Each of us deserves our "moment" where it feels like you finally connect with the object of your adoration one on one. Last night was mine.

Elvis started into "Allison" and the crowd screamed, male and female alike. (I've always admired the fact that EC's popularity is evenly divided between the sexes.) Then, he turned to his left and looked right at me. (No silly, I immediately said to myself, he's just looking in your direction, and everybody thinks he's looking at them.) Yet, there was no one in front of me, yet, and our eyes felt so locked. Then, he raised one eyebrow in acknowledgement of some unspoken shared belief, as only Elvis Costello can do, and turned to face the crowd again...

As anyone who saw this tour knows, Sting came out next, to join Elvis for the second half of "Allison." The crowd went wild and I was immediately snapped out of my suspension of disbelief. Their duet was priceless... but could never top the connection I felt during my "moment" with my musical mentor. Elvis Costello is a rare gem of an artist that will never be replaced or up-staged. Whether he is all alone, fronting his band, or an entire symphony orchestra, his voice just melts me like EMOTIONAL CHOCOLATE!

Senators Must Hear from Us NOW!

It has been a year since the House passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act and we must demand that the Senate quit stalling and support a bill to restore our rights. Although opponents of women's fair pay have implied that the House-passed bill has "gone too far," they couldn't be more wrong.

As we promote the Senate version of the bill, the Fair Pay Restoration Act (S.1843), we must remind our Senators that the proposed Act is really quite simple - it does nothing new and simply gives women back the decades-old enforcement rights that the Supreme Court took away from them last year!

In the Senate, the fair pay bill has had a tumultuous year. After a Senate committee hearing on S. 1843 in January, the Senate leadership hoped to expedite fair pay restoration by bringing the House-passed version of the bill directly to the Senate floor in April. But Senate conservatives campaigned against the bill, demanding that the Senate consider another version that had been introduced directly into the Senate, and that they have hearings with an opportunity for discussion and amendments.

The 57 yes votes for the Senate version of the bill weren't enough to stop the Republican filibuster and close debate, so now we must get more sponsors and supporters for the Senate bill before any further Senate action can be taken this fall.

On Thursday, July 17th, supporters of fair pay for women gathered for a rally and press event on the Senate side of the Capitol in the "Senate Swamp" along with Lily Ledbetter herself, Kim Gandy, President of NOW, and dozens of supportive senators and Congresswomen, including Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi.

These leaders stood together to demand fair pay, and now we must join them to build support for the Senate bill -- send a message now, and also plan to contact your senators when they come back to your state for their August recess.

Call and email your Senators now and demand fair pay for women!

Call now - (202) 224-3121 - and ask for each of your senators' offices in turn, and tell them you want the senator to suppoer the Lilly Ledbetter fair Pay Act in the Senate.

Background:

Last year the Supreme Court sharply limited the ability of women who have suffered pay discrimination to seek back pay and other compensation. A month after the Court denied Lilly Ledbetter's claim for pay discrimination in May 2007, the House of Representatives passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

The Senate version (S.1843), the Fair Pay Restoration Act, will fix the Court's misinterpretation of Title VII and ensure that pay discrimination victims get their fair day in court. This Act will simply return us to the longstanding rule that treated each and every discriminatory paycheck as a new act of discrimination.

It's sad enough that women are still paid only 77 cents or less to men's dollar, even though civil rights laws banned wage discrimination more than four decades ago. The Supreme Court's decision could push back much of the progress that women have been making in closing the wage gap.

That's why the Republican obstructionism and mis-characterizations must end! The House passed the Fair Pay Act over a year ago and it's time for the Senate to act. Write or call your Senators now to encourage them to sponsor and support this bill. Let them know that you oppose any attempts to water down the anti-discrimination measure or undermine the rights of those covered by the 1964 civil rights law.

If your senator is already a cosponsor, ask him or her to use show leadership and gather more sponsors and supporters and help get this bill passed!

New Yorker Cover -- Satire or Slur?

You don't even need to open the latest edition of the New Yorker to see racism in the media and the presidential race. All you need to do is look at the cover!

The July 21 issue of the New Yorker magazine features a caricature of Senator Barack and Michelle Obama in the Oval Office. Michelle is clad in guerrilla warfare garb, a machine gun over her shoulder. A portrait of Osama bin Laden is over the fireplace, and Barack (dressed like bin Laden) is giving Michelle a fist bump while a U.S. flag merrily burns in the fireplace. In this context, we're guessing the fist bump is the one Fox News described as a "terrorist fist jab."

New Yorker editor David Remnick says it is satire, so that makes it okay?

Sorry, we're not buying it. This cover will appear on newsstands across the country, possibly the world, and will likely do more to fuel racist stereotypes than to skewer them.

Thanks to thousands of messages from activists like you, the House of
Representatives is proposing to increase federal funding for the Title X ("ten") family-planning program, and the Senate is proposing to cut funding from reckless and irresponsible "abstinence-only" programs!

We certainly have come a long way! But don't think the anti-choice extremists don't know it - they aren't backing down. In fact, as you read this, they are rallying their forces. That's why we MUST call on members of Congress to stand firm.

To be totally honest, the clear and demonstrated effectiveness of Title X and the well-documented failure that is "abstinence-only" programming should make this funding decision a no-brainer.

However, the anti-choice - and, apparently, anti-birth control and anti-cancer screening - right wing has decided to put ideology before our nation's health-care needs.

Here's how the debate breaks down: on one side you have scientific experts, leading medical authorities, and an overwhelming majority of parents. On the other side you have a vocal minority of ideologues.

But that minority has proven very influential in the past. And its members are busily mobilizing in the high-stakes battle over limited federal money. They want a government that spends your tax dollars to teach lies and misinformation, while low-income women lose access to pre-natal care and contraception.

106 Wolves Killed in 118 Days!

Nearly one wolf per day has been killed since the Bush Administration stripped them of their endangered species protection in March.

Tell the Interior Department to do its job and protect wolves instead of allowing them to be killed.

Dear Lynn,

The last time I wrote you, 37 wolves had been slaughtered since the Bush Administration stripped them of their endangered species protection in March.

Now I'm sorry to report that a terrible new milestone has been reached: 106 wolves have been killed in the past 118 days.

That's nearly one wolf killed every day. And if Wyoming, Idaho and Montana have their way, at least 900 wolves -- nearly 60 percent of the population -- could be exterminated this fall, when a massive public hunt begins.

Make no mistake: This will be the very last summer for many of Yellowstone's wolves -- unless immediate action is taken to stop the killing.

That is why I am urging you to sign our petition to the Interior Department demanding that it restore protection for wolves now.

Tourists visiting Yellowstone have been horrified to learn that the very wolves they've traveled hundreds and thousands of miles to see are being gunned down just outside the park. Hundreds of tourists a day are signing petitions to protest the slaughter.

And as I write, our partner organization, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), is circulating those petitions in the park AND taking court action -- along with 11 other conservation groups -- to compel the Bush Administration to restore protection for the wolves.

What can you do to help the wolves of the Northern Rockies from where you live?

First, be sure to sign our petition.

Then, if you'd like to do more, you can donate to help the NRDC Action Fund build a national outcry against the slaughter.

Your support will help us broadcast the wolf's plight and mobilize America against the Bush Administration's heartless, wolf-killing policy.

Swift action is imperative since the wolf death count rises higher every day.

Wyoming, Montana and Idaho are planning public hunts for the region's remaining 1,400 wolves this fall -- the first in more than three decades. Once the leaves fall from the trees, wolves will be easy targets for aerial sharpshooters who can gun down entire packs in a matter of minutes.

That is why we must act quickly this summer to compel the Bush Administration to restore the wolf's desperately needed Endangered Species protection.
